	Abstract:	Edward Bushnell (1865-1944) was the son of Ebenezer and Cornelia K (Woodruff) Bushnell. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1880s and Edward became a lawyer. His specialty was estate administration. He was involved in many social and civic activities, including the Cleveland School Board, where he served as president from 1915 to 1917. He was married to Maude Kidder Sherwin. The collection consists of correspondence and financial and legal documents relating to Bushnell's non-legal interests and to several estates which he handled.

3	Title:	William Sheldon Kerruish Papers, Series II

	Abstract:	William Sheldon Kerruish (1831-1927) was educated at Twinsburgh Institute, Western Reserve College and graduated from Yale University in 1855. After being admitted to the Cleveland Bar Association in 1859 he practiced law with the firm of Ranney, Backus and Noble. The collection consists of an 1855 yearbook of Yale College, several letters from Kerruish's classmates, and notes for a reunion speech. The yearbook contains pictures of the class members and a number of personal notes wishing him a future of good fortune.

4	Title:	Myron S. Stanford Papers

	Abstract:	Myron S. Stanford was a lawyer active in Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish organizations and in the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. When he immigrated in 1920 from Poland to the United States, his name was Meier Spokojny. By 1921 his name was Meyer Spocony, and by 1929 his name had been changed to Myron Spocony Stanford. From 1941 to 1945, he served as an assistant police prosecutor for the City of Cleveland. He ran unsuccessfully for several political positions. At various times he served as president of the United Jewish Religious Schools, Fairmount Temple Men's Club, B'nai B'rith Mid-Day Lodge, B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, and Masada Chapter, Zionist Organization of America. He chaired the performing arts committee of the Jewish Community Center and was active in Yiddish theater productions there. The collection consists of programs and correspondence relating to Jewish organizations with which Stanford was involved; briefs, book reviews, and scripts written by Stanford; newspaper clippings, diaries, diplomas, awards; and a scrapbook. The collection is particularly strong in materials relating to the Men's Club of Fairmount Temple and the travel diaries detailing Israeli life in the 1950s and Jewish life in Russia, especially Moscow and Leningrad, in the late 1950s and early 1970s.

	Abstract:	Manuel Levine (1881-1939) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1897 and became a lawyer and judge, rising to the position of Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals of Ohio. Levine was also interested in the preparation of the immigrant for citizenship and was president of the Cleveland Immigration League. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches by and about Levine, reports, legal documents, financial records such as receipts and bills of sale, photocopies of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, and copies of miscellaneous newspaper clippings, most of which relate to Judge Levine's career or to developments in the legal profession during the 1920s and 1930s.

	Abstract:	Russell N. Chase (1900-1980) was a lawyer, president of the Cleveland, Ohio, chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Lawyers Guild and the Cornell Club of Cleveland, and a member of the Hermit and University clubs. His cases dealt primarily with estates and civil liberties. In the 1940s he was involved in various civil liberties cases regarding the foreign-born accused of communist activities and affiliations. The collection consists of speeches, news releases, handbills, newspaper and magazine articles, political and legal documents, client files, and correspondence.

	Abstract:	Harry Franklin Payer (1875-1952) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, trial lawyer who entered Democratic Party politics. He attained the positions of assistant city solicitor under Newton D. Baker, president of the Cuyahoga County Bar Association, and Assistant Secretary of State of the United States under President Franklin Roosevelt. He was also active in Cleveland's Czech community and in the Alumni Association of Western Reserve University. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, cards, programs, drawings, speeches, articles, lists and school records.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Bar Assocaition (f. 1873) is an organization of of Cleveland, Ohio, lawyers whose purpose is to maintain the honor and dignity of the law profession and promote legal and judicial reform. Operating via a series of committees, the association over the years has investigated misconduct by lawyers, judges, sheriffs, and police, which has resulted in resignations and/or disbarment. The collection consists of minutes, agendas, financial materials, correspondence, memoranda, directories, records of the Court Management Project, a subject file, scrapbooks and issues of the Cleveland Bar Association journal. The collection is useful for understanding the activities and interests of the association, including the Court Management Project, 1970-76, which explored judicial reform in Cuyahoga County courts, and illuminates some of the controversy which surrounded the "deregulation" of the profession, such as the advertising of legal services.

	Abstract:	John N. Stockwell Jr. was a lawyer and politician in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a municipal lawyer with the city of Cleveland and served as city law director under Mayor Newton D. Baker. Stockwell was a graduate of Western Reserve College and Cornell University School of Law. He was elected to the Ohio State Legislature in 1906 and to the Ohio State Senate in 1911, and was instrumental in creating the state public utilites commission. Stockwell was also active in rewriting the Cleveland city charter. His wife, Cornelia Ranney Stockwell, and her three daughters; Alice, Katherine, and Jane, were involved in the local Cleveland suffrage movement. The collection consists of personal family and business correspondence, Ohio Supreme Court published briefs, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings.

	Abstract:	Frank E. Joseph, Jr. was a descendant of the Joseph family that arrived in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1872 and later founded the Joseph and Feiss Company. He was an attorney for Hahn, Loeser, Freedheim, Dean & Wellman and president of Bellefaire JCB. He also served on the boards of the American Red Cross, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, the Temple-Tifereth Israel, and the Oakwood Club. The collection consists of twenty-one scrapbooks and correspondence. The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, programs, photographs, correspondence, and ticket stubs.

	Abstract:	Henry A. Rocker was a prominent lawyer and a leader in civic and Jewish affairs in Cleveland, Ohio. The son of Hungarian immigrant and editor Samuel Rocker, Henry A. Rocker graduated from Cleveland Law School in 1907 and practiced law in the Cleveland area until 1950. He was a founder of the Cleveland City Club, a member of the board of the Cleveland Community Chest, president of Park Synagogue (Anshe Emeth) from 1930-1953, and president of the Jewish Community Council of Cleveland from 1945-1953. Additionally, he served on the board of overseers of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and as a member of the board of directors of the United Jewish Appeal. The collection consists of awards, correspondence, essays, reports, an oral history transcript, drashim (homiletical interpretations of the Torah), and newspaper clippings.

	Abstract:	Louis P. Fernberg (1891-1955) was a prominent criminal defense attorney in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Born in Cincinnati, Fernberg received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati and came to Cleveland in the early 1920s. He defended several clients involved in the police bribery scandals of the 1930s. Fernberg was involved in the theater community as an officer in the Loyal Order of Greeters, Cleveland Lodge No. 1 throughout the 1920s. The collection consists of a legal brief, a newsletter, an Army of the United States separation qualification record, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

	Abstract:	Seth Chase Taft was born in 1922, the grandson of president William H. Taft and son of Cincinnati mayor Charles Phelps Taft II. Following service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Taft married Francis Prindle and began a successful career with Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue in Cleveland. Taft was involved with politics and community activities for many years, including the reformation of the Cuyahoga County Charter in the 1950s and an unsuccessful Republican candidacy for mayor of Cleveland in 1967. He served as a Cuyahoga County commissioner from 1971 to 1978. The collection consists of awards, biographical documents, campaign literature, correspondence, financial data, meetings minutes, newspaper clippings, photographs, research files, and urban development proposal reports.
